Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced by the intestinal bacteria through the fermentation of non-digestible fibers. At the intestinal level butyrate plays a regulatory role in maintaining optimal gut health by:
  1. Ameliorating the mucosal barrier
  2. Fueling the renewal of the epithelial lining
  3. Macrophages more tolerant towards commensal bacteria
  4. Globlet cell release more mucins
  5. Increase in IL-10 & T-regs
  6. B cells increase production of sig IgAs
  7. Neutrophil chemotaxis

On a local and also multi-systemic level, butyrate expands the pool of regulatory
T Cells and promotes self-tolerance.
